Botox &

Dermal Fillers

When most people hear the word “Botox,” they think of celebrities trying to recapture their youthful appearance with facial injections that leave them stiff and emotionless. But the truth is, Botox and dermal fillers go beyond cosmetology.

What Can Your Dentist Do With Botox?

While plastic surgeons typically use Botox to remove wrinkles and imperfections of the face, dentists like Dr. Quinn and Dr. Mitchell at Smiles for Life Family Dentistry can also use it for medical purposes.

TMJ Treatment

TMJ (temporomandibular joint dysfunction) is a condition that causes pain and restricted movement of the jaw. Many patients who suffer from TMJ often have associated headaches and migraines due to overworked muscles. Botox treatments can bring relief by relaxing those muscles and easing tension in the face.

Bruxism Treatment

Bruxism, or clenching and grinding of the teeth, often happens while we sleep. This aggravates the jaw, causing pain and discomfort. It can also weaken and damage otherwise healthy teeth, and exacerbate periodontal disease. Much like TMJ, it can be accompanied by headaches and migraines. And much like the treatment for TMJ, Botox can be the answer! Similarly, it eases the facial muscles and relieves pain.

Dentures

It will take anyone some time to adjust to dentures, but if you’re really feeling uncomfortable with them, Botox can help. Your facial muscles actually do some work to hold your dentures in place, so if those muscles are hyperactive, it’s going to be a little more difficult for you. Botox can relax them and make it easier for you to stabilize the denture.

Cosmetic Dentistry

And of course, there are the traditional cosmetic uses for Botox and Dermal Fillers. Dr. Quinn and Dr. Mitchell can use them in lip augmentation and for wrinkles to make your entire smile as beautiful as possible. It might seem odd to get Botox at your dentist, but think of all the cosmetic dentistry that’s being done in offices throughout the United States. It’s a matter of convenience for the patient.

Also, the mouth is an area that dentists are familiar with. They understand oral health at a holistic level, and use similar injection points when performing general dentistry and restorative procedures. Plus, there’s an added level of security when you go to the same doctor for different needs. You’ll always want someone who’s familiar with your medical history.
