What Is Invisalign?

Have you long desired to straighten your crooked teeth but were unhappy about using braces? Now you have an alternative solution for straight and beautiful teeth – Invisalign.

Invisalign is an orthodontic solution that uses a series of clear, plastic aligners to shift the teeth into a straightened position gradually. Invisalign is the leading provider for clear aligner options which are designed to give the teeth their desired shape and angle.

In contrast to traditional braces, which use wires, cemented metal brackets, and rubber bands to shift teeth, Invisalign offers a subtle route to a more attractive smile. Invisalign can offer similar results as metal braces, and in many cases, it’s a faster treatment option.

Fast, nearly invisible, and removable, Invisalign is a popular option for adults who don’t want their treatment on display. At Smiles for Life Family Dentistry, our doctors have spent numerous years helping restore beautiful smiles to countless faces. Benefit from their expertise by scheduling your treatment today.

The Invisalign Treatment Process

The first step for treatment is to schedule a consultation with Smiles for Life. Our team of dental professionals will examine your mouth and determine whether or not Invisalign is the right choice for orthodontic correction.

Invisalign is suited for older teens and adults who have their permanent teeth, but not for children who have milk teeth or whose teeth are still growing. It is a treatment that requires dedication from patients to achieve the best results. |You will need to keep your aligners on for most of the day, but can easily remove the aligners for eating and brushing. Invisalign is perfect for anyone who doesn’t have a tooth infection or any physical condition that may prevent them from wearing the aligners for extended periods of time.

If you are a good candidate, impressions of your teeth are taken and sent to Invisalign, where your aligners will be built. Once completed, your custom-designed aligners are mailed to our offices, and we give you a call when they’re ready.

When you come to pick them up, your doctor will ensure your first set fits correctly. From then on, it’s your job to make sure you wear your aligners for about 22 hours per day. They can be removed when eating and drinking, brushing and flossing, and playing contact sports, in some cases.

Every 2 weeks, you’ll switch to a new set of aligners. And every 6 weeks, you’ll come in for an examination so your doctor can track your progress. Usually, patients require about 20-24 sets of aligners to straighten their teeth completely. So the typical treatment time is about a year. This will, of course, vary depending on the patient.

What are the Benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign has quite a few benefits, compared to traditional metal braces.

Nearly invisible – Invisalign is made of clear plastic, making it perfect if you want to get orthodontic treatment without everyone knowing about it.

Comfortable and convenient – Invisalign does not poke and prod your mouth like traditional braces, making it much more comfortable. The pressure exerted is also even and gradual, so there is less discomfort, compared to braces.

Removable – You can remove your Invisalign aligners to eat, drink, brush, floss, and more, unlike traditional metal braces.

Conditions that can be Treated by Invisalign

Invisalign is extremely helpful in addressing and treating the following conditions:

Teeth crowding
This is a condition when your teeth have little to no space between them and appear almost crowded and squished in your mouth. The Invisalign aligners will help bring about a natural, even spacing between your teeth.

A crossbite occurs when there is a misalignment in your dental arches. Essentially, your upper and lower rows of teeth will have a weird angle to them, making them misaligned with each other. This will position your teeth extremely close to your cheek muscles or your tongue. Crossbites can occur both on the upper teeth (anterior crossbite) and the lower teeth (posterior crossbite). The Invisalign aligners will straighten the misalignment and align both sets of teeth to each other.

When the upper row of teeth overlap over the lower row of teeth and jut outside the mouth, the condition is called an overbite. The Invisalign aligners will push back the upper row of teeth to correctly align inside your mouth.

In an underbite, the lower row of teeth extend outwards from the mouth and protrude over the upper set of teeth. The Invisalign aligners will re-angle and re-align your lower row of teeth to fit snugly in your mouth.

Gaps can occur between teeth either due to natural dental structure or due to other factors such as the formation of plaque, gum disease, excessive thumb sucking during childhood which pushes the teeth away from each other and tongue thrust when the tongue pushes against the front teeth, creating large gaps. The Invisalign aligners when used, will bring your teeth closer to each other and give them a snug fit.

Does Invisalign Hurt?

Invisalign aligners are relatively painless and may hurt a little when the teeth are being naturally re-aligned. But this pain disappears after a few weeks. You may also feel minor discomfort during the initial few days when you’re just getting used to the foreign feel of the aligners in your mouth. But this will go away soon too.

The doctors at Smiles for Life are extremely empathetic, and patient comfort is of the utmost importance to them. They will prescribe pain relievers should you need them.
